Democracy listening Tour of Red America

What this project is about

The Democracy Listening Tour seeks to hear directly from Americans—especially Trump voters—about how they see the state of democratic principles within our constitutional republic. The goal is to uncover the personal stories and lived experiences behind people’s views, not just their political opinions. While polls and focus groups capture broad trends, they rarely explore why people feel the way they do. We want to listen to individual stories that reveal what’s behind those views—experiences with government, justice, work, or community that shape how people think democracy is working (or not working).

Why your perspective matters

Across the country, Americans of all political backgrounds say democracy isn’t working the way it should. But the national conversation is often dominated by partisanship and stereotypes.Your story can help challenge those assumptions. The goal isn’t to debate or persuade—it’s to understand and document what’s really driving people’s views so that reformers and policymakers can better grasp how to make our system work for everyone.

What to expect

Each interview lasts about 60-90 minutes. It’s a one-on-one conversation, not a debate. You’ll be asked about your experiences, values, and views on how democracy works in practice. With your permission, short quotes or stories may appear (anonymously if you prefer) in a published essay, podcast, video clip, or presentation.
